Orthobiologics

What Exactly is Orthobiologics Therapy?

Orthobiologics

Orthobiologics Therapy is taking the medical profession by storm. It has proven itself the most effective non-surgical treatment to help patients not only avoid surgery but also quickly recover from painful medical orthopedic conditions. Many people, not wanting to undergo invasive and risky surgery, are more and more turning to Orthobiologics Therapy for a reliable (pain and disability resolving ) treatment to resolve their pain and improve their day to day lives.

Orthobiologics Therapy is organic, non-surgical and non-invasive. There is little risk and rare complications for the patient. Orthobiologics are the body’s “neutral” cells and can transform into any type of tissue your body needs at the time. They are often called the repairmen (women) of your body.

At a certain point your injury or arthritic condition are past the point of recovery, your condition becomes chronic, there just aren’t enough Orthobiologics to repair the damaged area. Orthobiologics Therapy supplies the extra Orthobiologics needed to repair your damaged tissue. With this “boost”, the Orthobiologics do their job removing older, damaged cells and creating new healthy cartilage, bone, tendon and ligament cells.

Orthobiologics Therapy help both professional athletes and “weekend warriors” recover from sport injuries, avoid surgery, and take less time for healing so there is less time away from their favorite sport. For us “regular people”, Orthobiologics heal damaged joints, tendons and ligaments worn out from everyday use and wear and tear. Orthobiologics Therapy allows us to get back to our normal activities of daily living, pain free and with increased mobility in our joints and tendons.

Patients find that within several weeks of having Orthobiologics Therapy, they are feeling much better, with much less pain, as the Orthobiologics are actively work repairing the damaged area.

Depending on the individual person and condition there are a variety of Orthobiologics Therapies that are available. All procedures are performed in my office under local anesthesia. Often a relaxing medication like Valium is prescribed if the patient would like to take it prior to the procedure. General anesthesia, with its own risks and complications, is never necessary.

With Orthobiologics Therapy, there are no hospital visits or overnight stays. The procedure takes about 4 hours to complete and then you are free to go back to your regular restful activities. As part of the recuperation period it is often necessary to wear a support for a few days to help rest and immobilize the healing area.

Types of Orthobiologics Therapy

Based on the individual patient’s complaints and condition(s) there are several types of Orthobiologics Therapy protocols that are available.

  • I. Pure Platelet Rich Plasma: The patient’s blood is drawn from their arm and than spun in a centrifuge two times under special conditions. The result is pure platelet rich plasma that contains over 30 growth factors and 10 times the normal number of platelets that are in your blood.

We now have the ability to add a protein matrix to the pure platelet rich plasma that greatly increases the growth factors and their ability to heal damaged tissue.

Some conditions that would benefit from pure platelet rich plasma are:

Shoulder: mild arthritis, small tear in rotator cuff, shoulder bursitis, tendonitis

Elbow: tennis elbow, tears in soft tissue, tendonitis, bursitis

Wrist: ganglion cyst, mild to moderate arthritis, bursitis

Hand: trigger finger, mild to moderate arthritis, bursitis

    Hip: mild arthritis, bursitis

Knee: Chrondromalacia patella, Patella tendonitis, torn medial and or lateral meniscus, mild to moderate arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis

Leg: Achilles tendon- Gastrocnemius muscle junction tear

Ankle: Achilles tendonitis and Achilles bursitis, mild to moderate ankle sprain without torn ligaments

Foot: bunion pain, tailor bunion pain, hammer toe pain, ganglion cyst, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, mild to moderate arthritis, Achilles tendonitis and Achilles bursitis, acute and delayed healing fractures, acute fractures with a space (gap) between fracture fragments.

  • II. Bone Marrow Derived Orthobiologics Therapy:

Under local anesthesia Dr. Bieber harvests (takes) the bone marrow Orthobiologics from a very small hole (the size of a needle hole) from a hip bone called the iliac crest. The bone marrow Orthobiologics are placed into a centrifuge and spun two times where the bone marrow Orthobiologics are separated and prepared. This procedure concentrates the bone marrow Orthobiologics in a very high concentration creating bone marrow Orthobiologics that optimize healing when injected into the damaged area.

The successful protocol Dr. Bieber uses is to perform the Bone Marrow Derived Orthobiologics Therapy in conjunction with Pure Platelet Rich Plasma. This powerful combination is injected under musculoskeletal ultrasound into the injured or damaged joint, tendons and ligaments to ensure accurate needle placement for optimal success.

This first session is followed approximately 4 weeks later by a booster injection of the Pure Platelet Rich Plasma.

Some conditions that would benefit from the Bone Marrow Derived Orthobiologics and Pure Platelet Rich Plasma are:

Shoulder: severe arthritis, severe rotator cuff tears, severe tendon tears, severe shoulder bursitis, severe tendonitis

Elbow: severe arthritis, severe tears in tendons and ligaments, tendonitis, bursitis

Wrist: severe arthritis, severe injury to joint, tendons and ligaments

Hand: severe arthritis, severe injury to joint, tendons and ligaments

Hip: Often with more severe hip conditions we have the patient see Dr. Bieber and our physicals therapist for special treatments to increase the hip joint space prior to performing the Orthobiologics therapy

Conditions treated:moderate to severe arthritis, severe injury to joint, tendons and ligaments, bone on bone arthritis, avascular necrosis (death of bone)-

Knee: severe arthritis, bone on bone arthritis, severe injury to joint, tendons and ligaments,

Leg: Severe Achilles tendon and Gastrocnemius muscle junction tear

Ankle: Severe Achilles tendonitis and Achilles bursitis, severe ankle sprain with partially torn ligaments, severe arthritis, bone on bone arthritis, severe injury to joint, tendons and ligaments

Foot: severe bunion pain, severe tailor bunion pain, severe heel spur pain, Severe Achilles tendonitis and Achilles bursitis, delayed and non union healing fractures, acute fractures with a space between fragments. severe arthritis, bone on bone arthritis, severe injury to joint, tendons and ligaments, avascular necrosis (death of bone)

Benefits and Use of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK) provides accurate real time pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue throughout the body. MSK is safe and painless, producing accurate pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves.

We use a non-invasive transducer and ultrasound gel placed directly on the skin. The transducer transmits high frequency sound waves through the gel into the body. The transducer then collects the sounds that bounce back and our computer then uses those waves to create an image of the damaged area. MSK does not use radiation like an x-ray; therefore there is no radiation exposure to the patient.

I cannot express, in words, the benefits of utilizing musculoskeletal ultrasound to identify and pinpoint the exact areas of injury and damage in your or your loved ones joint, tendons or ligaments. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is non invasive – using no radiation or dyes to identify in real time where your pain is coming from and allows us to deposit the Orthobiologics and Pure Platelet Rich Plasma in exactly the right location to ensure and enhance your healing.

Many doctors just drop Orthobiologics into one or two areas in the hopes that the Orthobiologics float to the “right spot”. Using musculoskeletal ultrasound to guide your Orthobiologics Therapy injection, we can place the Orthobiologics in the exact position needed to gain the maximum results. To insure optimal outcome we often place the Orthobiologics in 3 to 6 locations. Each case is based upon the individual’s specific injury and concerns.

Specific Body Parts Treated by Orthobiologics Therapy

Shoulder

Orthobiologics Therapy can be used as an alternative for shoulder surgery to treat chronic and painful shoulder conditions. Shoulder surgery can often be a major procedure with many risks and complications. Even a simple shoulder surgery may leave one with scar tissue that wasn’t present prior to the surgery, can cause long-term pain, and overall lower the shoulder’s range of motion. Orthobiologics Therapy is great for rotator cuff injuries as well as other shoulder conditions such as arthritis and labrum tears.

Hip

Hip Replacement Surgery has become a mainstream and common approach to correcting joint arthritis, bursitis, and muscle tears when the conservative treatments like physical therapy and medication don’t work and have failed to relieve pain as well as fix the underlying cause of the injury.

Orthobiologics therapy can be used as a safe alternative for Hip Replacement Surgery. For patients that have bone on bone arthritis in the hip joint we often do a mobilization of the hip joint prior to the Orthobiologics Therapy. Mobilization of the hip joint is done over three consecutive weeks and has been found to greatly increase the success of the Orthobiologics Therapy. It involves placing a local anesthetic in the hip joint and having our highly trained physical therapist put the hip joint through range of motion exercises thereby creating a space (that previously didn’t exist) in the hip joint. Orthobiologics Therapy is then performed whereby Dr. Bieber injects the Orthobiologics into the now opened joint and all other areas of weakness and damage.

Knee

Knee replacement surgery is a commonly performed procedure that involves inserting an artificial joint made of metal, plastics, alloys and polymers. We unfortunately often see patients that not only have had 1 knee surgery but 2 an even 3. The reason for this is due to the breakdown of such materials over time that can result in pain, discomfort and dislocation.

Orthobiologics Therapy offers a safe and viable alternative to knee replacement surgery with little risk of complication or infection. General anesthesia is not needed for any of the Orthobiologics procedures and so that risk is also eliminated. Pain can be improved significantly and may be permanently eliminated.

Initial improvement in the knee is seen within a few weeks and then gradually increases as the healing progresses. Again, since Orthobiologics are derived from the patient’s own body, there is little risk of infection or complication. Most patients are back to their regular restful activities right after the procedure. It is often recommended that the patient wear a knee support for a week or two after the Orthobiologics Treatment to ensure optimal healing.

Elbow

The elbow is a much used joint. Through over use, it is possible to develop tendonitis such as golf or tennis elbow. Orthobiologics Therapy can treat chronic elbow tendonitis as well as help treat joint arthritis and partial UCL tears. UCL tears are extremely common among athletes and Orthobiologics Therapy is used at the professional level to help athletes recover from this type of injury. It is recommended that the patient wear an elbow support for a week or two after the Orthobiologics Treatment to ensure optimal healing.

Hand and Wrist

Pain and immobility of the hand and wrist can be treated using Orthobiologics Therapy. Some medical conditions treatable by Orthobiologics Therapy include joint arthritis, tendonitis, wrist sprains, partial muscle and tendon tears, and tenosynovitis. Orthobiologics Therapy can alleviate chronic hand and wrist pain that causes disability. It is often recommended that the patient wear a hand and wrist support for a week or two after the Orthobiologics Treatment to ensure optimal healing.

Foot and Ankle

Foot and ankle pain can restrict one from walking, or doing one’s normal daily activities. Orthobiologics Therapy quickens the recovery of both chronic foot and ankle problems and injuries. Injuries such as ankle sprains and fractures can be treated with Orthobiologics Therapy, which can also help prevent long-term effects and complications. Other medical conditions like tendonitis, arthritis, bunions, heel pain, and planter fasciitis that make it extremely painful to walk can be treated using Orthobiologics Therapy. One can avoid surgery while simultaneously alleviate their painful foot condition. It is recommended that the patient wear a foot and ankle support for a week or two after the Orthobiologics Treatment to ensure optimal healing.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis has always been a tricky condition. Many have had to resort to surgery or live in disabling pain. Orthobiologics Therapy is tremendously beneficial for osteoarthritis, helping patients to alleviate much of their arthritic pain and regrow healthy tissue that was lost or damaged due to the arthritis. Painful symptoms caused by an arthritic joint are greatly reduced and usually eliminated with Orthobiologics Therapy.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Other Immunosuppressant Arthritis

There is a lot of research going on now as to the benefits of Orthobiologics with arthritis related to immunosuppressant diseases such as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. The research is promising for the benefits of Orthobiologics Therapy. From communicating with physicians across the country their results show that patients’ symptoms improve 30% to 40%. These results are not as successful as when Orthobiologics treat osteoarthritis but certainly significant enough to greatly benefit and improve the symptoms and quality of life of you or your loved one.

The Future Of Knee Treatment

Using Orthobiologics Therapy, It is possible to treat severe knee pain bypassing any need for surgery and significantly reducing one's pain. Orthobiologics are already present everywhere in your body and used to create healthy tissue for your body. When someone is injured or a joint damaged from arthritis, there is often a lack of enough Orthobiologics in that area to repair the damaged joint tissue. Orthobiologics Therapy adds a boost of Orthobiologics to the knee so that it now has enough of the tools it needs to repair the injured or arthritic tissue.

Why Is This Important?

If you have tried unsuccessfully other conservative treatment and do not want to consider surgery, Orthobiologics Therapy is a way for you to drastically reduce your pain and disability. If you are considering surgery, non-surgically treating knee pain first can help you avoid that surgery and vastly reduces your cost, recovery time, and potential risk. There are many different types of knee surgeires including soft tissue meniscus surgery as wel as the very invasive partial or complete knee joint replacement surgery.

Even with a "simple" arthroscopic menicus repair there is a significant chance of risks and complications of the surgery. The simplest risk is that post arthroscopic meniscus surgery many patients end up with arthritis. Removal or surgical repair (cutting and surgical manipulation) of a stabilizing tissue - the meniscus- makes your knee joint less stable and we can all imagine with a less stable knee more knee problems follow. Wouldn't it be better if there was some technique to heal and repair that meniscus vs removal of the meniscus. Orthobiologics Thherapy is that answer!!!

You May Not Need Surgery On Your Knee

There are many potential risks when it comes to knee surgery whether it be soft tissue or bone surgery.

Below is a lisiting of some of the potential risks of joint replacement surgery compared to Orthobiologics Therapy that has none of these risks.

What Are Orthobiologics And How Do They Help?

Orthobiologics Therapy uses adult non-controversial Orthobiologics, which are derived from a person’s own bone marrow cells. These Orthobiologics mixed with Platelet Rich Plasma are then injected into the wounded area and act as a "repairman" restoring damaged tissue and creating healthy tissue. With new healthy cells, you will experience much less pain and the knee is given a gigantic boost to continue healing itself. It now has enough of the tools to heal on its own and this means less pain and greater mobility of your knee joint. Orthobiologics actively heal the knee joint and surrounding tissue for up to 1 year after the Orthobiologics therapy.

This procedure is non-surgical, non-invasive, organic and has very little risk. There are no hospital visits or overnight stays. There is also little rehabilitation needed from the procedure itself. Initial improvement is often seen right away with a major decrease in pain and as the Orthobiologics align with the body’s natural healing process, recovery continues gradually over a period of weeks. Orthobiologics are actively repairing your knee joint for up to one year after the Orthobiologics Therapy.

What Happens During The Procedure?

The procedure is simple and straightforward. There are no hospital visits or overnight stays. You are able to walk out of the office right after the treatment is finished. The first step is an initial consultation with Dr. Bieber. Here, he will examine your knee and all the previous tests done. Dr. Bieber will often perform an ultrasound of the knee joint and perform and review x-rays and often an MRI. Dr. Bieber will then make an assessment on how to use Orthobiologics Therapy to treat your knee condition.

After the initial consultation, you will set up an appointment for the actual Orthobiologics Therapy session. This procedure takes about three hours to complete. First, Orthobiologics will be drawn from bone marrow tissue using a harvesting technique. The Orthobiologics are than separated from the bone marrow tissue and concentrated using a specialized machine. Afterwards, your Orthobiologics and your Platelet Rich Plasma are combined and injected into your knee. It is common for Dr. Bieber to inject 2 to 4 areas of your knee joint and surrounding tissue depending on your individual condition. Dr. Bieber uses real time ultrasounography to ensure that he is placing your Orthobiologics and Platelet Rich Plasma into the exact areas of your injury and concern. They, the Orthobiologics, begin to repair the damage inside your knee. It is a simple, non-invasive procedure and once finished, there is a great chance that your knee condition will be greatly improved.

Orthobiologics Therapy

Orthobiologics Therapy is applied in our office to heal hip injuries and chronic hip pain and it is possible to prevent hip replacement surgery with a Orthobiologics treatment.

Why Is This Important?

Having hip pain can make life extremely difficult, preventing you from doing all the activities you love to do like walking, shopping and spending active time with family and friends. If all your current treatments including physical therapy and pain medication are not working to relieve your painful hip condition before you consider surgery, do a Orthobiologics Therapy. Hip surgery, is not only a very invasive procedure but also requires many months of rehabilitation, often requiring an in patient hospital stay of many weeks and months of out patient therapy and rehabilitation.

Orthobiologics Therapy is a non-surgical treatment with a proven track record to eradicate painful hip conditions and prevent the need for surgery. With this non-surgical and non-invasive procedure, it is possible to forgo surgery, it's risks, its rehabilitation period, it's expenses as well as potential long-term consequences such as a metal prosthesis and constant soreness. It is not uncommon infact that patients may even need a second hip surgery.

The risks are very minimal with Orthobiologics Therapy.

What Exactly Is Orthobiologics Therapy?

In Orthobiologics Therapy, we use non-controversial adult Orthobiologics that are taken from the patient's own bone marrow tissue. Orthobiologics are everywhere in the body. They act as a neutral cell. Whenever the body needs to produce a specific kind of tissue (ie. skin, muscle, ligament, tendon), the Orthobiologics in the area transform into the type of tissue that the body needs. Orthobiologics act as the "repairmen" of the body".

When someone sustains an injury, it is often the case that there are not enough Orthobiologics in the area to create new healthy tissue and restore damage tissue. The body doesn't have enough of the tools it needs to repair the injury. This is where we come in! By adding new Orthobiologics to the damaged area, these Orthobiologics can give the body the boost of healthy cells it needs to repair the injury. Often, these additional Orthobiologics can create tremendous advantages for the body's healing process, now having the tools it needs to repair the injury and the result is often, much less pain and the possibility to completely heal the injury.

What Happens During The Procedure?

Orthobiologics Therapy is simple and straight forward. This procedure is non-surgical, non-invasive, organic, and has little risk. It takes about 3 hours to complete and is done in office. There are no hospital visits or overnight stays. You are able to leave right after the procedure and go back to normal restful activity.

First, you will set up a consultation with Dr. Bieber, where he can examine your hip, review all x-rays and MRI's, understand your history, and create a plan for your Orthobiologics injection. On your next visit, we will first draw a sample of blood (for the platelet rich plasma) and bone marrow tissue (Orthobiologics) using a special harvesting technique. We then take this bone marrow tissue and use a specailized machine to separate the bone marrow tissue from the pure Orthobiologics. Next, Dr. Bieber injects the Orthobiologics and platelet rich plasma, using ultrasounography to guide the injection, into your hip joint and surrounding tissue. Dr. Bieber often injects 3 - 4 different areas in your hip depending on your specific hip condition. Each person is different and their treatment is specific to their concerns.

Initial improvement can be seen right away as you experience less pain over the next few days. Then improvement occurs gradually as Orthobiologics continue to generate healthy hip tissue and restore damaged tissue. Orthobiologics are active in repairing the injured or arthritic hip for up to 1 year after the Orthobiologics therapy.

Shoulder Surgery

  • Arthritis
  • Rotator Cuff Tears
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
  • Recurrent Shoulder Dislocations
  • Glenoid Labrum Tears or Degeneration

The Future Of Shoulder Treatment

Orthobiologics Therapy helps many different shoulder conditions, alleviating pain, healing injury, and potentially preventing the need for surgery. In orthopedic medicine, Orthobiologics therapy is able to treat shoulder injuries without the cost, risks, and long-term painful rehabilation associated with surgery. Many of my patients are finding that after a Orthobiologics injection, the amount of pain they regulary experience is drastically decreased.

What Is Orthobiologics Therapy?

Orthobiologics Therapy adds a boost of Orthobiologics to one's damaged shoulder and these Orthobiologics actively work to repair the shoulder. Orthobiologics are everywhere in the body and act as the body's "repairman". Whenever someone sustains an injury or parts of the body break down, such as when muscles, ligaments, and tendons degenerate in daily life, Orthobiologics transform into the type of cell that the body needs to heal itself, growing new healthy tissue.

Often, when someone sustains a serious injury, there aren't enough Orthobiologics to restore damaged tissue and create enough healthy tissue to repair the injury. This is where we come in! By adding new Orthobiologics, taken from the patient's own bone marrow, we give the shoulder new tools to heal itself, more Orthobiologics that can create healthy tissue.

As a result, many patients find a significant decrease in pain, increase in mobility, and often Orthobiologics Therapy acts as a catalyst to heal the injury completely.

Are There Any Risks?

There is very little risk to a Orthobiologics injection because it is an organic non-surgical, and non-invasive procedure.

For Rotator Cuff Injuries

The shoulder is an amazing ball and socket joint and the most mobile joint in the body. Because of its complexity, shoulder surgery is understandingly difficult. Rotator cuff injuries are some of the most common injuries of the body but of over 40,000 Rotator Cuff tear surgeries each year, only 6 out of 10 are successful due to the complexity of the shoulder joint.

The reason for this is simple as any injury deals with you not having enough Orthobiologics to repair the damaged muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It makes sense then that invasive shoulder surgery, where tendons and capsules are cut and stitched, further harming your shoulder, cannot possibly provide you with enough of the Orthobiologics that you need to repair the damage from the surgery and all the damaged tissue from the injury.

An injection of Orthobiologics to your shoulder can vastly accelerate your shoulder's healing response increasing your chance of bypassing the need for surgery.

What Happens During The Procedure?

This procedure is extremely simple and straight forward. There are no hosptial visits or overnight stays. After your Orthobiologics Therapy session, you will be able to walk out of our office and continue with normal but restful activities.

Firstly, you'll book an initial consultation with Dr. Bieber, where he will examine your shoulder, go over your previous history, and study any previous tests done by other doctors. Next, you'll set up an appointment for your actual Orthobiologics Therapy session. During Orthobiologics Therapy, Dr. Bieber will then take a sample of bone marrow that contains the Orthobiologics using a special injection technique. Next, the Orthobiologics will be separated from the bone marrow and injected into the damaged shoulder.

The procedure takes about 3 hours to complete. You may see initial improvement within a couple of days and then gradual improvement as the Orthobiologics continue to grow healthy tissue and replace old, damaged tissue.

Elbow Surgery

  • Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow)
  • Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)
  • Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury (UCL Injury)
  • Partial Tear of the Distal Biceps Tendon

Orthobiologics Therapy: The Future Of Elbow Treatment

Orthobiologics Therapy uses the power of Orthobiologics to repair severe and painful injuries. Orthobiologics are taken from the patient's own bone marrow tissue using a special harvesting technique. The Orthobiologics are than concentrated by a special process and than combined with Platelet Rich Plasma (gotten from your blood). The Orthobiologics and Platelet Rich Plasma are injected into the damaged elbow to restore the elbow's damaged tissue and create healthy tissue that will repair the injury and significantly lower the amount of pain that the patient experiences. Orthobiologics Therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive, organic, and low-risk procedure.

Often, an injury cannot heal because there aren't enough Orthobiologics available to repair damaged tissue. It's like comparing the body to be able to heal a scratch vs healing a big wound. You need a lot more healing cells to heal a big injury. The result of not having enough Orthobiologics to heal your joint or tendon injury is you having pain and immobility. This is where we come in! Dr. Bieber is able to harness additional Orthobiologics from your bone marrow tissue and than he injects them into the elbow joint and surrounding tissue giving the area more Orthobiologics to create healthy tissue. The Orthobiologics do their jobs, transforming into the type of tissue that your body needs and the injury is significantly improved.

How Can This Help?

Getting Orthobiologics Therapy can potentially prevent you from needing surgery. If you aren't seeking surgery, Orthobiologics Therapy can significantly reduce the pain that you are experiencing and quicken the recovery process for your elbow, especially if you haven't been seeing any improvement over the last several weeks or months or even years.

Surgery is expensive, risky, and comes with a long-term painful rehabiliation. It should always be a last resort option. Orthobiologics Therapy is less expensive and has much less risk. There is little rehabiliation needed from the procedure itself becasue it is non-surgical.

Are There Any Risks?

There is little risk with a Orthobiologics injection because it is non-surgical and Orthobiologics are an organic material.

When Will My Pain Go Away?

The amount of pain in the elbow may be significantly improved right after the procedure or initial improvement may be seen within a few weeks gradually increasing as the healing progresses.

There is little recovery time from the procedure itself because it is an an injection and afterwards, most patients are able to do their normal restful activities within 1 – 3 days. The Orthobiologics align with the body’s natural recovery period to regenerate damaged elbow tissue and will continue to regenerate the elbow for up to 1 year.

What Happens On The Day Of My Consultation With Dr. Bieber?

The first thing that you will do is schedule a consultation with Dr. Bieber. Wrist And/Or Hand Surgery

  • Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger
  • Tendinitis of the wrist and/or hand
  • DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis

What Is Orthobiologics Therapy?

Orthobiologics Therapy applies non-controversial adult Orthobiologics to damaged tissue of severe hand and/or wrist injuries and in many cases, significantly decreases the patient’s pain and helps them quickly recover. In Orthobiologics Therapy, Orthobiologics are organically drawn from a patient’s bone marrow and then directly injected into the damaged tissue of the injury. The Orthobiologics, once inside the wrist and/or hand transform themselves into new healthy tissue and simultaneously restore damaged tissue. Usually, the injury is drastically improved and the healing from Orthobiologics Therapy can eliminate the need for surgery.

What are Orthobiologics exactly? Orthobiologics are everywhere in the body and have a very important role. When parts of the body degenerate through everyday use or are injured, Orthobiologics in the area transform themselves into the type of tissue that is needed by the body to repair the injury. They do this automatically. When an injury has gone past the point of recovery, there aren’t enough Orthobiologics to create this healthy tissue and restore the damaged tissue.

This is where we come in! We inject additional Orthobiologics into that area and in this way, there are more Orthobiologics to repair damaged tissue. Through Orthobiologics Therapy, pain can not only be significantly reduced but it is also possible to heal the injury completely. This will improve the function and mobility of the area as well.

Because Orthobiologics Therapy is non-surgical, there are none of the risks and costs that are involved with surgery. There is also none of the long-term and painful rehabilitation associated with surgery or the potential for long-term complication. This procedure is both organic because the Orthobiologics that are used come for your own body and non-invasive since the Orthobiologics are merely injected into the damaged location.

Orthobiologics Therapy is like adding a gigantic concentrated boost of organic-based healing properties into the injured area and is a great method to alleviate chronic wrist and/or hand pain.

What Hand and Wrist Conditions Can Be Treated Using Orthobiologics Therapy?

  • Hand Arthritis
  • Wrist Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • trigger finger
  • Tendonitis of the wrist or hand
  • DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis

Risks of Surgery Vs. Orthobiologics Therapy

As a non-surgical option, there is very little risk to Orthobiologics Therapy. There is less a 1% chance of a local infection and almost no chance of receiving an allergic reaction to the treatment.

This can be compared to the potentially tremendous risks of surgery on the hand or wrist because of the invasiveness of surgery. Such risks include the possibility of infection, nerve damage, ligament damage, the causing of traumatic arthritis, and unattractive scarring.

Orthobiologics Therapy is non-surgical and therefore, has none of the downsides of surgery.

Recovery Time of Surgery Vs. Orthobiologics Therapy

With Orthobiologics Therapy, most patients are back to normal restful activity right after the procedure. The Orthobiologics act in normal alignment with the body’s method of healing. Initial improvement can be seen within several weeks and gradually increasing as the healing progresses.

The invasiveness of surgery means a long process of painful rehabilitation. Depending on the type of surgery, it may take one anywhere from three to six months to recover from the surgical procedure.

Why Is Orthobiologics Therapy Important?

Because of it’s invasiveness, surgery is not only a high risk procedure but also tremendously expensive. Surgery should always be a last resort with all other conservative options exhausted first. Orthobiologics Therapy is the last option before surgery. It is the most powerful way to non-surgically treat an injury and significantly reduce pain while correcting the damaged muscles, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage of the injury.

If successful, Orthobiologics Therapy can save you a long and painful rehabilitation period as well as the potential long-term complications that may arise from surgery. This non-surgical and non-invasive treatment has a proven track record to help patients heal wrist and/or hand injuries and avoid surgery altogether.

What is Treatment Like?

Dr. Benjamin Bieber offers a non-surgical treatment with a proven track record to repair painful wrist and hand conditions. In most cases, pain and mobility is significantly improved.

First, call one of our Orthobiologics specialists, Dana or Sanil, at 718-835-0100 and set up a consultation with Dr. Bieber. On the day of your consultation, Dr. Bieber will examine your wrist and/or hand as well as assess all previous tests done by other physicians. Once a diagnosis is confirmed and Dr. Bieber feels that Orthobiologics Therapy can help, you’ll schedule an appointment for a Orthobiologics Therapy session.

Next, on the date of your Orthobiologics Therapy, you’ll arrive at our state of the art medical facility, where a sample of blood and bone marrow is taken. bone marrow is derived from a small needle and the Orthobiologics are separated out from this bone marrow.

The Orthobiologics are processed in a machine that condenses all of the Orthobiologics into one area. Dr. Bieber then applies a local anesthetic to the damaged area of the wrist and injects the Orthobiologics into that wrist and/or hand. The procedure takes about 2-4 hours to complete and is done in-office. You are then free to leave and return to normal restful activity. There are no hospital visits or overnight stays.

Most patients that have Orthobiologics Therapy are recommended to receive a platelet rich plasma booster one month after the procedure.

What Is Orthobiologics Therapy?

I am sure that you have read about Orthobiologics in the news. The Orthobiologics that we use in our office are non-controversial. They come from the patient’s own body.

Orthobiologics are neutral cells that exist everywhere in the body. When tissue breaks down, Orthobiologics transform themselves instantly into the type of tissue that the body needs to repair itself. Orthobiologics create new healthy tissue and restore damaged tissue. When someone has an injury, the body cannot properly heal itself and the result is pain, decay, and immobility.

This is where we come in! We inject new Orthobiologics into the damaged area to giving the foot's healing response a natural boost. The Orthobiologics do their job to repair damaged tissue and the result is often an increasingly healed injury with significantly less pain and enough tools to continue healing.

Risks of Surgery vs. Orthobiologics Therapy

There is almost no risk with Orthobiologics Therapy with less than a 1% chance of a local infection. Compare this with surgery, where there is a significant risk of nerve damage, ligament and tendon damage, twising of the bones, heavy scarring, loose joints, immobility of the foot, infection, and shrunken toes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Orthobiologics treatment a new revolutionary method?

Previously patients had few choices when it came to their painful damaged joint or torn or injured tendon: “Live with it“ or “Surgery“. Fortunately, with the evolution of modern medicine, you have more choices today. Using a technique with little to no risk, a damaged joint, tendon and ligament can be repaired using the power of your own body’s non controversial Orthobiologics.

Is it safe to use Orthobiologics?

The use of your bodies own non controversial Orthobiologics has little to no risk. To „harvest“ or get the Orthobiologics Dr. Bieber makes a small needle size hole. Once the Orthobiologics are harvested, this small hole is closed using a steri strip. These procedures are performed using local anesthesia and often the patient may take a valium or similar relaxant. Orthobiologics therapy eliminates the risks associated with major joint replacement surgery or arthroscopic procedures that require general anesthesia, the cutting of bone and soft tissue, and the use of stapes or stitches to close a wound.

Possible side effects associated with administration of Orthobiologics are closely monitored by the International Cellular Medicine Society, which provides detailed information obtained on the worldwide web: www.cellmedicinesociety.org

How do I know if I am a good candidate for Orthobiologics treatment?

In our office we have treated patients ranging in age from pediatrics to seniors. Patients of all ages see great benefits from Orthobiologics therapy. Each patients is evaluated individually- not every patient needs Orthobiologics therapy for their condition. Dr. Bieber consults with you about our problem, reviews all testing and together you decide if Orthobiologics therapy is right for you to solve your joint, tendon or ligament problem.

Who can not undergo Orthobiologics treatment?

Orthobiologics treatment is not recommended for patients with current infections or cancer.

What body parts orthopedic and rheumatologic problem can make use of Orthobiologics?

Most damaged joints, tendon and ligaments will greatly benefit and heal using Orthobiologics therapy. Dr. Bieber has extensive experience treating shoulders, wrists, hips, knees feet and ankles. When you have a problem in your joint, it is not usually just the joint itself that is the problem. Dr. Bieber will work with you to thoroughly evaluate your concerns and not only treat the specific damaged joint, tendon or ligament. He often, as with the knee joint, also injects Orthobiologics into the supporting joint ligaments to strengthen your joint.

How quickly the Orthobiologics treat joint arthritis?

Repair and remodeling of damaged joint tissue ie cartilage usually takes 2-3 months. The Orthobiologics are often active for up to 1 year but a significant improvement in condition (especially pain) can be expected within 2-3 weeks.

Approximately 4 weeks after the Orthobiologics therapy, Dr. Bieber performs a platelet rich plasma injection into the area of concern to additionally “boost” the working of the Orthobiologics.
In severe cases, a second round of Orthobiologics therapy is sometimes recommended.

What is the effectiveness of the treatment of arthritis and arthrosis by Orthobiologics?

Firstly lets discuss:

What Is Arthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease or osteoarthrosis, is “a group of mechanical abnormalities involving degradation of joints, [1]lincluding articular cartilage and subchondral bone. Osteoarthritis is caused by mechanical stress on the joint, and (unlike rheumatoid arthritis), is not caused by inflammation, although inflammation can result from the physical damage.[2] Symptoms may include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, and sometimes an effusion. The main cause is limb misalignment, combined with hereditary, developmental, and metabolic factors, which leads to loss of cartilage, sometimes exposing and damaging the underlying bone. Pain makes it difficult to exercise, so muscles may atrophy.”

What Is Arthrosis?

Arthrosis is caused by normal wear and tear on your joints and cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones and helps joints move smoothly. Eventually, the cartilage may disappear completely, and your joint may have bone-to-bone contact.

Arthrosis is most common in the joints of your hands, neck, knees, and hips. However, it can affect any joint.

Orthobiologics therapy can repair and treat both osteoarthritis and arthrosis.

Which drugs would not I use during treatment by Orthobiologics?

You should not use non steroidal anti inflammatories one week before the Orthobiologics procedure and 4-6 weeks after the Orthobiologics procedure. It is preferred that a patient go off their blood thinners for a few days before and after the procedure, again with permission of their treating doctor. If not recommended by their doctor to go off the blood thinner the procedure can still be performed safely.

What can negatively affect the treatment by Orthobiologics?

Alcohol reduces the healing potential of Orthobiologics, so the week before the scheduled surgery and at least 4-6 weeks after it, you should limit its intake to a minimum.

What can positively affect the treatment of arthrosis by Orthobiologics?

American scientists have come up with a finding that vitamin D3, blueberry extract and green tea extract promotes proliferation and effectiveness of Orthobiologics. We recommend a specific vitamin to start taking following the Orthobiologics procedure that contains:

How long does the whole process of Orthobiologics withdrawal, preparation and application into the joint take?

Consider approximately 4-hours, including all preparations (liposuction or bone marrow harvest and isolation of Orthobiologics) and the placement of Orthobiologics into the joint or damaged tissue.

Can I receive Orthobiologics treatment in several joints at the same time?

Yes, at one session it is appropriate, if necessary, to apply Orthobiologics into several affected joints. It's just a matter of the quantity of withdrawn bone marrow or adipose tissue and a sufficient amount of blood drawn.

I am waiting for artificial joint replacement. Can I undergo Orthobiologics treatment beforehand?

Yes, Orthobiologics have the ability to regenerate even significantly damaged cartilage- joints with bone and bone arthritis and it is therefore possible to take advantage of this treatment option without the risk of undergoing extensive surgery. Some patients can thus completely avoid joint destructive surgery with all the risks and complications or at least significantly delay it, relieve pain and can lead full lives.

Is liposuction or bone marrow harvesting painful?

The first puncture of the needle, which puts in the anesthetic- local anesthesia the the area where Dr. Bieber is getting the Orthobiologics can be tender for a a few moments. The adipose tissue or bone marrow that is withdrawn afterwards is numb and usually painless.

How long does the collection and administration of Orthobiologics take?

The actual preparation for liposuction or bone marrow harvest (marking of extracted area and local anaesthesia) takes about 30 minutes, liposuction takes about 10-15 minutes, processing and isolation of Orthobiologics from adipose tissue takes 45 minutes, the application to the affected joint and tissues is performed using an musculoskeletal ultrasound. The length of time of placing the Orthobiologics in the different areas of your concern, depends on your specific problem.

Are my Orthobiologics somehow tampered with?

Your Orthobiologics are processed by specialized personnel trained in cellular technology. Processing of your cells happens within one surgical procedure under sterile conditions (so as to prevent infection) in a very considered manner with a special procedure in which Orthobiologics are only released from bone marrow tissue. Afterwards they are collected by centrifugation and ready for administration. Your Orthobiologics are therefore not damaged or altered, their biological properties remain unchanged.

How long after the collection of Orthobiologics the recovery takes?

Liposuction (collection of adipose tissue) or bone marrow harvest (collection of bone marrow cells), blood drawing and placement of Orthobiologics is done on an outpatient basis. Removal of adipose or bone marrow tissue is followed by a short-term several-day pain in the place of removal and a hematoma may occur (bruise). Hematoma is usually absorbed within a few days. If the pain lasts in the place of withdrawal of adipose or bone marrow tissue and painful swelling persists, please contact us immediately.

Usually, however, there is no limitation in normal restful daily activities and no need for special arrangements. Dr. Bieber may often recommend a patient to wear a support or splint the rest the treated joint for a few days.

What can I expect after the application of Orthobiologics and blood plasma?

After application of Orthobiologics and blood plasma, there is an increase in discomfort for approximately 10 days. Your body is creating an inflammatory response to activate the Orthobiologics and begin healing of the damaged and injured tissue. The positive effects of your injection may occur within approximately six weeks.

We recommend regular daily activity without much physical exertion for the first 48 hours after application.

After 10-12 days it is possible to start light exercising without any physical strain for 6 weeks.
4-6 weeks after application of Orthobiologics, increased physical exertion and sports activity are not recommended.

We recommend patients resist physical strain for 6 weeks after the application. Overexertion of the area may result in incomplete healing of the treated tissue.

The Purpose Of Your Appointment
